Whilst we don’t need much of an excuse to celebrate our four-legged family members, National Pet Day is a great opportunity to remind ourselves of all the benefits they bring to our lives.
National Pet Day was founded in 2006 with the aim of celebrating the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters and rescues all around the globe.
Even the *big* names such as Barack Obama have been celebrating the day. But we don’t need to be famous names to know just how much our dogs mean to us. The research into the benefits of owning a pet are immense, from lowering your blood pressure, to helping you get more exercise, to becoming more social, all helped by having a dog by your side.
And that’s without even considering the life-changing effect that assistance dogs can have on their recipients. We can only imagine the sense of freedom that a Guide Dog or Hearing Dog may have in allowing their partner to regain some independence in their lives.
All in all the impact is huge. If you needed any encouragement, today is the day to give your dog that extra hug (if he enjoys it) another couple of throws of the ball or maybe that favourite treat or toy and just take a few moments to remind ourselves how awesome our dogs are.
